SPOT REMOVAL OF FATTY IRREGULARITIES

Fat dissolving injections, also known as lipolytic injections, are a non-surgical cosmetic procedure designed to reduce localiSed fat deposits in certain areas of the body. This treatment involves injecting a solution into the targeted area, which breaks down the fat cells, allowing the body to naturally eliminate them over time.

What are they?

Most fat dissolving injections contain an active ingredient called deoxycholate. Deoxycholate or Deoxycholic acid is a naturally-occurring acid that is secreted by the liver with the bile juice that helps break down complex fat in the diet so that it can be absorbed by the body. These injections are synthetic version of the same molecule and they break down fat cells by dissolving their membrane (outer boundary) and releasing their contents.

When the injection is administered into the subcutaneous layer of fat, it targets the fat cells in that specific area. The deoxycholate disrupts the fat cells, causing them to dissolve permanently. Once broken down, these fat cells are eliminated by the body’s natural processes through the lymphatic system.

They can be used to dissolve the double chin or sagging fat pads to create a sculpted jaw line. They can also be used anywhere else on the body where there is hard to lose localised fatty deposit. They are not suitable for dissolving large areas such as protruding belly.

Preparation:

To minimise bruising, it is recommended that you do not take any blood thinners on the day of the treatment. If you are taking Omega 3 fish oils, Aspirin, Clopidogrel or NSAIDs (such as Ibuprofen) try and avoid them for at least 48 hrs before the treatment. Avoiding Alcohol a day before the treatment also reduces chances of bruising.

What to Expect During the Treatment:

Consultation: During a fat dissolving injection treatment, you will first have a consultation with a qualified healthcare professional who will assess your suitability for the procedure. They will discuss your medical history, expectations, and goals to determine if you are a suitable candidate.

Injection: Once you are deemed suitable for the treatment, the healthcare professional will mark the areas to be treated, calculate the dose requirement and will numb the area with a local anaesthetic to minimise any discomfort. Then, using a fine needle or a cannula, the solution will be injected into the targeted area. The number of injections required will depend on the size and number of areas being treated.

Duration: The procedure usually takes around 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the extent of the treatment.

Immediate effects: You may experience some mild discomfort during the injections, but it is generally well-tolerated. However, if you have a low pain threshold, the healthcare professional may offer additional pain relief options. The area will look slightly red, swollen and bruised.

Aftercare:

After the treatment, you may continue to experience some tenderness, swelling, redness, and bruising in the treated area for 7-10 days. These are normal and should subside gradually. Applying ice packs and taking over-the-counter pain relievers can help alleviate any discomfort. It is important to follow the aftercare instructions provided by your healthcare professional, which may include:

  • Avoiding strenuous exercise and physical activity for a few days.

  • Wearing compression garments, if recommended, to aid in the healing process.

  • Avoiding exposure to direct sunlight and using sunscreen to protect the treated area.

It is crucial to maintain a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and a balanced diet to optimize the results of the treatment. While fat dissolving injections can help reduce localized fat deposits, they are not a substitute for overall weight loss or a healthy lifestyle.

Side Effects:
  • Swelling, redness, and bruising in the treated area.

  • Temporary numbness or tingling.

  • Itching or discomfort at the injection site.

  • In rare cases, infection, pigmentation or skin irregularities can occur. It is important to discuss any concerns or potential side effects with your healthcare professional before undergoing the treatment. They will be able to provide you with detailed information and address any questions you may have.
